Croatia has temporarily suspended the import of goats and sheep from Greece and Romania – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-08-01 07:33:29

Bulgaria chose a few days ago to tighten border control

Croatia temporarily suspended the issuance of permits for the import of sheep and goats from Greece and Romania, where the plague by small ruminants animals continues to spread, reported the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, quoted by BTA.

There are currently no restrictions on the import of meat and meat products from small ruminants produced from sheep and goats originating outside the restricted zones in Greece and Romania.

The decision of the Croatian authorities was taken after the competent authorities in Greece and Romania informed the EU member states of the spread of plague of small ruminants in their territory and after the decision of both countries to no longer send animals to other EU member states without their approval.

Croatia informed about its decision the European Commission and the competent authority of Romania, from where the largest number of small ruminants are imported into the country.

This is a temporary measure and will be reviewed after the competent authorities of Romania and Greece notify EU member states of the end of the spread of plague among ruminants, the ministry said in a statement.

The first case of plague in small ruminants was reported to the European Commission’s Animal Disease Information System (ADIS) from Greece on 11 July. Romania reported the first outbreak of the disease on its territory on July 20. Sheep and goat disease continued to spread in both countries, Hina recalled.

Bulgaria did not decide on the effective measure of temporarily stopping the import of live small ruminants until the two neighboring countries control the spread of the infection. Our decision was to tighten border controls by subjecting imported animals to clinical examinations and sampling, as well as extensive and thorough examination of animals sent for immediate slaughter.
