Croatia: Earthquake shakes Zagreb – cathedral damaged

Two moderate earthquakes caused serious damage in the Croatian capital of Zagreb within half an hour on Sunday morning. To date, no one has been killed, but dozens of people have been injured, the 24sata.hr news portal reported.

According to the media, bricks fell from the roofs, facades cracked, walls collapsed and debris damaged parked cars. The cathedral in the center, the symbol of the city, was also damaged. One of the two spiers fell to the ground from a height of more than 100 meters. The pictures showed cars that had been crushed under stones.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported the magnitude of the first quake at 6.24 a.m. at 5.3 and that of the second quake at 7.01 a.m. at 5.0. The centers of the two quakes were seven kilometers northeast and six kilometers north of Zagreb.

“The quake lasted over ten seconds,” said a witness from the Reuters news agency. “It was by far the strongest I have ever felt”.

Croatia’s Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic warned the population on Twitter to keep apart because of the risk of infection with the coronavirus.
