25 years have passed since the premiere of the first film and more than 15 years since the premiere of the second, which raises a question about the public’s reception of this production. However, the magic is still intact and thanks to an ingenious and effective script, bad boys forever (Bad Boys for life, 2020) maintains a rhythm that makes her fly, and offers witty moments of humor.
The plot of the film follows Marcus (Martin Lawrence), who wants to retire to dedicate himself to his family, but an attack against his friend Mike (Will Smith) for reasons of personal revenge forces them to return to action. The Miami cops make jokes about his age (they are no longer the “bad boys” of the title) and about the leitmotif musical of the saga, which establishes their bond and leads them to chase criminals again. In addition, a team of young police officers joins them to help them (Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Vanessa Hudgens) and Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) returns to sponsor them.
The project is led by the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer, who, along with the late Don Simpson, produced hits like A detective on the loose in Hollywood (Beverly’s Cop, 1984) y Top Gun (1986). True to his style, Bruckheimer printed bad boys forever a breakneck pace. Michael Bay was replaced by Belgian filmmakers Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, who did a great job of replicating Bay’s bombastic, commercialized aesthetic.
The film follows the classic structure of buddy movie, where the doses of humor are as important as the action sequences. The success of the proposal lies in the family bond between the characters who, as in Arma Mortal 3 (Lethal Weapon III, 1992), in this third part it expands towards the past and towards the future.
bad boys forever It was released in theaters in January 2020, just before theaters closed due to the pandemic. The film found overwhelming success on Netflix (since Sony studios don’t have their own platform) and became a vital cult object ready to continue replicating.
