Today five villains from the last year will meet to fight each other and discover who is the best: on the one hand there is the malevolent Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey in “Sonic”, the movie), on the other the woman who only kills for sport ( Hilary Swank, “The Hunt”) and, in one more, the girl possessed by the spirit of a maniac (Kathryn Newton, “Freaky: this body is to kill”).
The other two are a man who casts his luck on a couple caught in repeating the same day, seemingly for eternity (JK Simmons, in “Palm Springs”) and a pair of negligent animated parents (Martin Short and Jane Krakowski, in “The Willoughbys”).
The group will meet virtually in the first installment of the Critics Choice Super Awards, where you vote pure audiovisual critics and that will recognize horror, action, allusive animation, science fiction and fantasy films.
Streaming platforms will have a strong presence with titles like “Da 5 Bloods: Brothers in Arms” and “Extraction: Rescue Mission”, both from Netflix, which fight for Best Action Movie; there is also Hulu’s “Palm Springs” and “The vast of night” produced by Amazon Studios in the Sci-Fi Movie or Fantasy category.
Old acquaintances from the cinema will also be present. The Best Action Actor category will face Tom Hanks for Greyhound, Apple TV +; Chris Hemsworth thanks to Extraction and Will Smith for “Bad Boys” forever, released in theaters in early 2020 and the third installment in the saga.
Hilary Swank is not only seeking the Best Villain award, but she was also considered Best Actress in an Action Movie alongside her “The Hunt” co-star, Betty Gilpin. In the category are Yifei Liu for Mulán and Blake Lively thanks to “The rhythm section”.
As Best Horror Movie are “Freaky: this body is to kill”; “The invisible man”; “Relic”, “The Rental” and “Sputnik: strange passenger”.
And not to change, Disney has two representatives in the Animation category with “Soul” and “Onward”, but it will not be easy since Netflix has three, “Over the moon”, “A shaun the sheep movie: Farmageddon” and “The Willoughbys”, “Wolfwalkers”, is from Apple.
“Tenet”, which in the midst of a pandemic was the bet of exhibitors to attract the public, is only in two categories.
