Criticized by WHO, Thailand Says About Mixing Sinovac-AstraZeneca Vaccine

Authority Thailand defends its policy of mixing two vaccine brands corona virus (COVID-19) is different to combat the surge in infection cases. Defense delivered after leading scientists World Health Organization (WHO) called the practice a ‘dangerous trend’ that was not supported by evidence.

As reported AFP, Tuesday (13/7/2021), Thailand is known to be struggling to cope with the latest outbreak triggered by Corona varian Delta highly contagious, with the number of cases and deaths soaring and the health care system starting to become overwhelmed.

Thai authorities say they will mix up the first dose vaksin Sinovac from China with the second dose AstraZeneca vaccine, to try and achieve the ‘booster’ effect in six weeks instead of the previous 12 weeks.

Thai virologist Yong Poovorawan stated that this practice was made possible by combining an inactivated viral vaccine — Sinovac — with a vector-borne viral vaccine — AstraZeneca.

“We can’t wait 12 weeks (for the booster effect) in this outbreak where the disease is spreading fast,” he said.

“But in the future, if there is a better vaccine, which is more developed… we will find a better way to deal with the situation,” Yong added.
