Things get serious with What if …? One of the greatest villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken over the Infinity Stones …
–
We have eight weeks of episodes of What if …? behind our backs and we have formed a clear idea of how they work, regardless of whether their story is comic, dramatic or something in between. But episodio 8 de What if…? wants to go further. And, to restore a new order, there is few villains more interesting than Ultron.
As you will remember, this cybernetic being was created by Tony Stark in Avengers: Age of Ultron to help “order” the world around peace, but things obviously went awry.

In “our world”, the Avengers stopped him, but here we are going to meet an alternate universe in which Ultron got his wish … And the Infinity Gems, by the way.
Despite its enormous repercussions, the chapter 8 of What If …? It is intentionally short (less than 30 minutes, if we remove the very long initial Marvel fanfare) and only shows a handful of main characters.
The heroes are Black Widow and Hawkeye, the less powerful Avengers. Perhaps that is why they have been able to survive until now, by having a low profile against the megalomaniac villain.
Precisely that concepto postapocalíptico, with only slight hopes enduring in the face of the crushing oppression, makes this story something “closer” and more humane (beware of the Terminator franchise, by the way), even though, as we say, the connotations of this episode are more cosmic than ever.
We do not want to spoil the viewing experience by telling details that, clearly, you have to see for yourself, but it is important to comment that, perhaps, one of the few defects that can be put to this episode is that, although it is inspired by good Part of Marvel Cinematic Universe, dodge “for convenience” very recent events …
And it’s a shame, because the connotations of these events could lead to clashes that make epoch … But nothing happens, because this episode of What if …? it is enough and it is left over to give us very interesting fights between characters we never would have imagined would fight each other.
And, incidentally, take the opportunity to bombard us with surprises in this scarce half hour. From secondary characters that we would never have imagined seeing back with that level of prominence to reversals of key events of the MCU.
We also found some sooo substantial script twists, which is not only cool to see on screen, but also represents a milestone in the series.
Aaaay, we can’t say much more without “getting mired” in spoilers, although we need to praise like this. Marvel Studios series he has known how to play his cards very well with respect to the expectations of the spectator.
It seems incredible that he knew how to entertain us so well for eight episodes before unleashing his true potential, but that “surprise factor” is precisely one of the strong points of the episode.
Apart from the narrative, it is also important to praise a very, very careful visual section, both in the fight choreographies (What a good start to the episode!) As in the games with lighting and slowdowns, which make good use of the hybrid between “cartoon” and reality in the series.
As is usual, those of you who are more “insiders” of Marvel have a festival of minigolosinas to enjoy, if you are attentive, from references to other films such as Guardians of the Galaxy to small drops of what awaits us in the future.
In addition, narratively it is very well spun, playing with that omniscient storyteller concept represents a Vigilante with whom the writers must have had a blast in this episode.
On the whole, this new chapter of the disney plus series, has left us with a great taste in our mouths, but the most interesting thing is that it makes it clear that the best could be yet to come. Relax, we will continue to monitor, for what may happen …

Assessment
As an episode itself, it is perfectly balanced in terms of action and story, but also dares to play with what we took for granted in the series. It is a full stop in it.
–
The best
Who dares to look beyond the borders of his own concept. The moments of action are exciting.
–
–
Worst
That, for “strategic” reasons, it dodges certain recent events of the UCM.
