This year, for the first time, there were no more categories with separate prizes for men and women during the 41st edition of the Golden Calf Gala. The decision, which was made in August this year was announced, met a lot of criticism and was even reason for Yorick van Wageningen to cancel his Academy membership. It is precisely he who won the gender neutral prize.
The fact that last night, for the first time in the history of the Golden Calves in the most important categories, not a single woman went home with the statue, has now caused some frustration. Including actress Katja Herbers, known from men’s hearts and the American drama series The Americans, expressed her dissatisfaction on Twitter. “The Calves are gender neutral and by the way, not a single woman or gender neutral actor has won an acting award,” she wrote last night.

Comedian Yora Rienstra also noted that no woman has won the coveted prize. And although making a distinction was no longer the intention when handing out the Golden Calves, Rienstra concludes that there are many more men who get leading roles in major films. That, she says, is where the shoe pinches. ‘And that is why you now see very clearly that they have the upper hand in neuter price distribution.’
Rienstra called it ‘too sad for words what is happening here now’. She made it clear that it is nothing to the detriment of the men. “But the organization should be ashamed of itself.”

Actress Maryam Hassouni, known for Meskin on Dunya & Desie, also commented on the outcome. She was short but sweet in her Instagram Stories: ‘That gender neutral suits men very well.’ Writer and AD columnist Saskia Noort also made herself heard. “Hooray for gender neutrality,” was her cynical message.
