Criticism of her honorary doctorate… Amira Fathy: Art is not just entertainment

Egyptian actress Amira Fathi received an honorary doctorate from the American University in Cairo, in recognition of her artistic efforts and contributions to discussing issues of concern to women through her artistic roles.

Some social media users met the news sarcastically, stressing that there are other personalities who deserve this title rather than those working in the technical field.

Amira responded to critics of the role of art in society and underestimated its importance, during statements reported by “An-Nahar”, where she indicated that the function of art is not only entertainment, as many believe, but it has a major role in society, as it can contribute to reducing economic crises and growth. The economy, through cinemas and art festivals that support tourism.

And she stressed that it is not a shame that the main goal of art is entertainment, and that this will not underestimate artists, or workers in the artistic field in general, explaining that this contributes to reducing life pressures and may remove depression for some.

And she confirmed that she supports what her compatriot, Bushra, put forward about teaching cinema, and including it in the educational curricula, in order to form artistic and cultural awareness among children and families about the importance of the role that art plays in society.
