Project satellite Starlink belong to Elon Musk have an ambitious mission to cover the entire Earth with the internet. This technology is predicted to be a solution for internet connectivity to remote areas. Is that right?
Early users of the Starlink internet in rural Bangor, Maine, in the northeastern United States, complained that Starlink’s internet prices were expensive due to the unstable quality of internet connections.
Meanwhile, another user, via the forum Reddit, said that those who live in rural Maine boast 33 times higher Starlink internet download speeds than their previous internet service.
However, as quoted from local local media Bangor Daily News, many doubted this nascent internet network even though SpaceX had won federal funding to expand internet access in rural Maine. They are not sure whether Starlink can maintain its high internet speeds when there are more subscribers and devices connected.
Early users also doubted the extent of the internet Starlink can be scaled to accommodate more users. According to SpaceX’s latest report to federal regulators, it is being tested by around 10,000 users spread all over the world.
One of the early adopters satellite internet Starlink is a high-ranking Maine official overseeing broadband access and ConnectME Authority executive director Peggy Schaffer. He recently swapped his old satellite system for the Starlink connection at home.
He argues, the initial equipment investment of USD 500 (around Rp. 7.2 million) plus a subscription fee of USD 90 per month (Rp. 1.2 million) using Starlink services, means that this network is only an option for people who have money.
“I don’t think this is the solution to the broadband problem in rural Maine. It may be one way, not the only way. And it is not a perfect way,” said Schaffer.
Since the beginning, Starlink was proud of being the answer to bringing connectivity to billions of people who still lack internet access. The idea is to deploy a group of satellites operating in low Earth orbit whose job it is to provide a continuous range of internet connections.
Currently, about 1,000 satellites Starlink has been used, and SpaceX plans to develop Starlink to launch more than 40,000 satellites into low Earth orbit.
This figure is five times the total satellite launched by humans since the emergence of spaceflight. SpaceX now has about a third of all active satellites in space. Elon Musk as CEO SpaceX also owns the most satellites in space.
