Criticism Mounts Against Japan Over Opposition to Ceasefire Resolution in Israel-Hamas Conflict

Arabs and other Muslims are criticizing Japan over the conflict between Israel and the Islamic organization Hamas. The backlash appears to have been caused by Japan’s opposition to the cease-fire resolution submitted by Russia at the United Nations Security Council on the 16th.

◆ Opposing the UN Security Council’s ceasefire resolution = interpreted as “opposing the ceasefire”

Japan, along with the United States and the United Kingdom, opposed the resolution proposed by Russia calling for a ceasefire, and the resolution was rejected. The reason for the opposition was that it “did not pursue Hamas by name,” but it was interpreted as “opposing the ceasefire.”

“I will never buy Japanese products again” and “Japan agreed to kill our Palestinian brothers.” Such posts are common on social networking sites (SNS). A post defending Gaza by saying, “Japan has provided a large amount of aid to Gaza,” was met with a series of backlash, with people saying, “We don’t need Japan’s help.” There are also strong voices accusing Japan of following the United States.

Additionally, on the night of the 19th in Tehran, Iran, an incident occurred where red paint was thrown on the wall of the Japanese embassy. Although it is unclear whether this is related to the situation in Gaza, the Japanese Embassy is urging Japanese residents to be careful.

On the 18th, a resolution calling for a temporary cessation of hostilities was introduced in the Security Council. Japan agreed, but the United States exercised its veto and it was rejected. A man in his 50s from Gaza said in a telephone interview on the 20th, “Right now, a ceasefire is first. If the airstrikes continue, we will all die.” (Mitsuru Spider)
