Deputy Prime Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) is far from impressed. “What I especially remember and see here is a powerless man.”
“The point is, you have to have a majority in this country – 76 seats out of 150 – to do anything.” According to Van Quickenborne, De Wever torpedoed his own formation attempt by lashing out at his then still potential liberal partners. “That’s just the break in style between this government and what he’s saying there. The way he lashes out at other people over and over is from a different era. That’s not the way we want to do it.”
Van Quickenborne prefers to talk about respecting colleagues in politics. “Even though you are from another party, you must be able to reconcile me. He cannot. And if you cannot reconcile, you cannot build.”
