Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison calls the storm of recent weeks the worst flood in Australian history. In just a few days, as much rain fell in the east of the country as normally in an entire year.
At least 21 people were killed and tens of thousands had to leave their homes. Thousands of homes are so damaged that they have to be completely demolished.
After the state of Queensland and the north of New South Wales were hit hard, it was the turn of the metropolitan city of Sydney in recent days. “It was unbelievable, there was such a huge amount of rain in such a short time. The cars were drifting in the street,” said Andrew Bullock, who lives in the Manly area.
A day later, he took his parents to the hardest hit area to show the devastation. Despite the bad weather, he had taken to the streets to film. “I’m a bit of a storm chaser. More than 150 milliliters of rain in just a few hours is unique for this part of the country.”
