The current blood group barometer shows a critical supply situation for Hesse – as of August 2, 2024. This means: things are slowly getting tight! The blood donation service is therefore calling on people: “Please come directly to a blood donation appointment near you and, if possible, bring a few friends with you.” If the barometer changes to threatening, the supply in the hospitals is at great risk.
Michael Hamperl, Helmut Schneider and Udo Stelzig from Fulda are ambassadors for blood donation. They are promoting regular donations of 500 milliliters of the precious elixir. “Blood saves lives. Donations are a sign of solidarity and a life-saving contribution to our society,” explained the three top donors, who have donated 560 blood donations between them. They were now invited to a small ceremony and honored by the German Red Cross (DRK) in Fulda.
Christoph Schwab, Chairman of the Board of the German Red Cross Fulda, praised the “proud achievement” and described the trio as “role models in our society”. Blood is a scarce resource, especially during the summer holidays, even in the Fulda region, which has over 100 blood donation appointments every year. “We are at the top here locally in Hesse, but supplies are currently tight. This makes your commitment to blood donation and support in recruiting first-time donors all the more important. Both deserve the highest recognition.”
The three honorees
Michael Hamperl, who is the branch manager of the forwarding company Zufall in Fulda and honorary president of the Fulda Carnival Society, knows how important it is and quoted Anne Frank: “Those who are happy and content will make others happy too.” That is what motivates him to donate blood regularly and do something for people in need. Helmut Schneider first donated blood when he was 19 years old in the German army. He said: “I have always been very lucky in life, so I want to give something back.” Today he can look back on an impressive 233 donations. And Udo Stelzig, who has been volunteering with the volunteer fire brigade for 50 years, made it clear: “I have seen a lot and know that a lot of blood is needed, especially in serious accidents. It is nice to see when you can help.” Information about blood donation appointments in your area or the process of donating blood is available on the free hotline 0800-1194911 or on the Internet at www.blutspende.de.
