Criterion Games Meeting Reveals Future of Need for Speed Series

Game Message February 20, 2024, 9:56 p.m

Selected influencers were allegedly invited to the headquarters of Criterion Games, where they had a long and insightful conversation with the creators about the future of Need for Speed. The next installment of the series may differ significantly from Unbound, reaching back to its roots.

We recently reported that Need for Speed Unbound has another year of quite an active life ahead of it, and in the meantime, reports have surfaced regarding the next installment of the series, officially unannounced yet. A YouTuber specializing in the topic of this series KuruHS released a video (below) in which he reported on a meeting recently held at the Criterion Games studio.

The creators of NFS invited a dozen or so influential community members for a long and insightful conversation about the future of the brand. Participants are prevented from disclosing the details of this visit by a signed non-disclosure agreement (NDA), but we have learned at least a general outline of the topics discussed:

  • Underground, Most Wanted and Carbon as reference points when designing the next game;
  • a new driving model, without drifting mechanics by pressing the brake button, but developing the current “traction” setting;
  • a more “meaningful” multiplayer mode;
  • greater variety of music genres;
  • in-depth car personalization system;
  • looking for sources of inspiration in each of the previous installments of the series (including spin-offs) and their game modes.
  • Criterion Games is apparently trying to win back old Need for Speed fans who have been watching the latest installments of the series.

    In addition, KuruHS reported that NFS Unbound did not achieve satisfactory sales, pointing to the cartoonish graphic style as one of the reasons for this and suggesting that the next installment will therefore return to visual realism. Moreover, according to him, last year’s rumors that a remake of Most Wanted was being made are most likely not true.

    Overall, the YouTuber stated that the conversation with Criterion Games representatives was “brutally honest”, but also “very satisfying” and aroused hope and optimism in the participants.

    Of course, these are unofficial reports and should be treated with caution. However, what adds credibility to the above video is the fact that even the official Need for Speed account left a comment under it – an entry with a sparse but meaningful text: “‘sup” (loosely translated: “How’s it going?”).
