Cristina Rivera Garza is the winner of the UDP Women and Media Chair Award

And it is a fact. The famous Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza is the winner of the former “UDP Women and Media Chair Award”, which rewards female non-fiction writers. On this occasion, her 2021 novel was awarded, Liliana’s Invincible Summer, in which he recounts the life and feminicide of his own sister.

In the opinion of the Josefina Licitra jury, “Rivera Garza tackles a topical issue with domestic police tools that lead her to collect evidence capable of slowly building the puzzle of a personal and cultural barbarism: the one that makes thousands of women all over the world become they are assassinated without causing any other noise than the media noise, which is fleeting by definition. The construction of this research, which is literary and political, is also done, or above all, with a solid and poetic manipulation of language, so that this transit through the heart of hell is, however unusual it may seem, lacerating and beautiful for the era”.

On this occasion, 77 titles from Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Peru and Chile participated. Indeed, the jury, made up of journalists and writers Josefina Licitra, Paula Escobar Chavarría and Cecilia García-Huidobro, highlighted the high level of the nominated works and the remarkable diversity of voices, themes and realities that come to life in this exhibition. , becoming a register of fundamental realities that cross the truths, dilemmas and contradictions of our continent from the writing of Latin American authors.

Cristina Rivera Garza (1964) has outstanding work that has earned her awards such as the Sor Juna Inés de la Cruz award in 2001 for no one will see me cry and in 2009 for death gives me; the Anna Seghers Award in 2005 and the Roger Callois Award.

The prize includes a jackpot of US$ 4,000 (about 3,500,000 pesos) and will be delivered shortly to the Mexican author.

The UDP Women and Media Chair was created in 2017 under the direction of journalist Paula Escobar Chavarría to create a space for reflection and dialogue on the role of the media in gender representation, in creating stereotypes and in making visible the plots that – give media – help or prevent people from having equal rights and duties.
