Former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has made a firm decision by presenting her own list to compete for the presidency of the National Justicialista Party (PJ), leaving behind the possibility of an agreement with Ricardo Quintela. Both leaders had agreed to a meeting to try to agree on a unity list, but the meeting never took place.
Cristina Kirchner, upon receiving no further signals from Quintela, moved forward with her plan and announced a list headed by herself for the presidency of the party. Accompanying his candidacy, five vice presidents stand out: José Mayans, current head of the block of senators and trusted man of the governor of Formosa, Gildo Insfrán, will occupy the first vice presidency. Catamarca senator Lucía Corpacci will be the candidate for second vice presidency, while Germán Martínez, head of the Unión por la Patria (UP) bloc of deputies, will be the third. Moreno’s mayor, Mariel Fernández, and Smata’s general secretary, Ricardo Pignanelli, complete the list as fourth and fifth vice presidents, respectively.
A surprise on the list is the absence of La Cámpora leaders in the main positions, although it is expected that they may have a place in the positions of party advisors.
For their part, Quintela’s entourage assures that they are preparing their own list to compete for the leadership of the PJ, with the necessary endorsements and the support of five provincial PJs. Quintela, known as the “Gitano”, does not plan to withdraw from the race.
This election marks a key moment for the future of Peronism, with important figures such as Mayans and Corpacci seeking to boost Cristina Kirchner’s leadership and reorganize the party in the face of upcoming political challenges.
