Piers Morgan fears that Cristiano Ronaldo will score for Manchester United against his beloved Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.

The stakes are high for both sides in the crucial clash at the Emirates Stadium, with the outcome of the match having a monumental effect on the race for the top four. A defeat for United would confirm that they will not play in the Champions League next season.

While a defeat to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal would give fierce rivals Tottenham the lead with six games remaining in the season. And Morgan has been in touch with Ronaldo to make sure the worst doesn’t happen for his team.

The TV personality and journalist tweeted: “I texted Ronaldo begging him not to score against us today. He said he won’t. The last time we played them in December he made the same promise and then scored twice when they beat us 3-2. I fear the worst.

Ronaldo returns to the United squad after not being called up for the matchday 4-0 loss to Liverpool in midweek for personal reasons. And Glenn Hoddle believes the impact of having the 37-year-old back on the team cannot be underestimated.

He told BT Sport: “There had to be changes after Liverpool’s performance, Liverpool were excellent that night. The entry of Cristiano Ronaldo will give them a big boost and I think with (Scott) McTominay in midfield with (Nemanja) Matic, they have a proper job today, but I think they are the right personnel today.”

Ralf Rangnick appears to be playing a 4-2-3-1 against Arsenal rather than the 4-3-3 formation he has recently deployed. Hoddle continued: “(Bruno) Fernandes is right in front of them and he can play a bit more free and then he can play the ball for Ronaldo.

“As for Arsenal, they are going to be so confident to come out of Stamford Bridge with three points, I think they would have been happy with just one point there and it has put them back in the driving seat now.

“I think (Ben) White coming back to the center of defense works for them and you know, this is going to be a great game and I think any team can go and get the three points today, I think it’s going to be a draw. It remains to be seen how the match turns out and whether Ronaldo will keep his promise with Morgan or add to his already impressive record against Arsenal.
