It doesn’t have to be a disadvantage if you’ve played with a multiple world footballer. Danny Simpson knows that too.
Not only can Cristiano Ronaldo score goals and win titles en masse, the Portuguese superstar from Al-Nassr is apparently very good at salvaging bad dates with Miss California. At least that’s what his former teammate Danny Simpson reports.
The 36-year-old spoke in the podcast Under the Cosh the curious anecdote of his rendezvous with the then Californian beauty queen in 2016. At that time he was under contract with Leicester City and had just sensationally won the Premier League with the club.

In preparation for the new season, the Foxes traveled to the USA to tour there and play a friendly against PSG, among other things. So Simpson and Co. were in Los Angeles when a friend of Simpsons arranged a date with Miss California.
Both met in a steakhouse in the US metropolis, but the chemistry wasn’t right right away. “So we started eating and I swear it wasn’t going well. She was probably like, ‘Who is this guy? I don’t understand a word, he’s from Salford (suburb of Manchester, ed.)'” It was “painful,” the former right-back continued.

But then the surprise: “Suddenly someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up and it was Ronaldo. (…) So I got up and hugged him. We chatted briefly about the pre-season and his extended vacation because he had just won the European Championship with Portugal.”
From that moment on, the date went completely differently. Miss California obviously recognized CR7. “I sat down again and she said, ‘How do you know Ronaldo?’ To be honest, she was a completely different person just because Ronaldo greeted me. So thanks for that Ronny!”

The date went better now, but the date didn’t get any better than that. Simpson didn’t like how the woman’s demeanor had changed just because he knew CR7.
Simpsons and Ronaldo’s connection dates back to a time together at Manchester United. With the Red Devils, Simpson progressed through youth academy and made the leap to the first team as the forward developed into a global star. Together they won the Champions League in 2008.

Simpson, however, did not make a lasting impression with the United pros and later played for Newcastle United, Leicester, Queens Park Rangers and Huddersfield Town. After an engagement at Bristol City, he ended his career in 2022. During his career, he played nine games in the Champions League and 213 Premier League games.
