JAKARTA – Megastar Cristiano Ronaldo will not return to his childhood club Sporting Lisbon this summer, says his agent Jorge Mendes.
Mendes’ claim comes after Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, insisted that she would try to bring her son back to the Portuguese club.
The 36-year-old’s contract is still a year away at Juventus, but he is rumored to return to Lisbon this summer.
Lisbon holds a special place for Ronaldo, as the club is where his senior career began.
After Sporting won the Portuguese title for the first time since 2002 on Tuesday, Aveiro said that “next year (Ronaldo) will play at Alvalade (Sporting stadium).”
However, Aveiro’s statement was refuted by Mendes, who said Ronaldo had no plans to play in Portugal again.
“Cristiano is very proud of Sporting after winning the championship, as he has shown in public,” Mendes told the Portuguese newspaper Record quoted by Reuters via Antara on Saturday, May 15.
“However, at the moment, his professional plans do not include playing in Portugal.”
Ronaldo himself currently leads the Serie A scorers list this season with 28 goals, but his club Juventus has had a difficult season and is in danger of not participating in next season’s Champions League.
They will host league champion Inter Milan on Saturday night at 23:00 GMT.
