The Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has been honored today in Spain with the Ibero-American Community Trophy as the best athlete in this region in 2011.
The award is part of the National Sports Awards that are organized every year by the Spanish Higher Sports Council (CSD) and awarded by the Royal Family.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid international won the European Golden Shoe in 2011 thanks to his 40 goals in the Spanish league.
Ronaldo succeeds the Argentine hockey player Luciana Aymar, the Brazilian swimmer César Cielo and the Argentine soccer players Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero and Leo Messi, winners of previous editions, in the list of winners of the Ibero-American Community Trophy.
Also the Spanish football coach, Vicente del Bosque, and the honorary president of Real Madrid, Alfredo Di Stéfano, are among those awarded the 2011 National Awards.
The main individual categories for active athletes have distinguished the 470 Olympic sailors Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos, world and European champions last year, and the player of the Spanish basketball team Juan Carlos Navarro, best Eurobasket player who won Spain, Reina Sofía and Don Felipe de Borbón awards, respectively.
The prizes will be awarded the first week of next December.
