LAUSANNE – Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo was the best scorer of the 2023 football year.
According to data from the International Federation of Football Historians and Statisticians, the 38-year-old player of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr scored a total of 54 goals in the highest competitions. That’s two more than Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane, but they play in significantly better leagues.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who headed to Saudi Arabia on lucrative terms at the end of 2022 from Manchester United, won the award for the fourth time after 2014, 2015 and 2019. According to the IFFHS, he scored 44 goals for the club last year. He scored 34 in the league, one in the domestic cup and nine in international cup competitions. He scored the remaining ten goals in the Portuguese national team.
French international Mbappé, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, and Englishman Harry Kane, who played for Tottenham and Bayern Munich last year, had 52 goals in 2023. The third was Manchester City’s Norwegian gunner Erling Haaland, who scored 50 goals.
