Patience is not the strongest trait of club leaders in Saudi Arabia. Soon, a change of coach will probably take place in Al-Nassr. The team, in which the star is Cristiano Ronaldo, has already found a successor to the Portuguese Luis Castro. He is a famous Italian coach.
63-year-old Luis Castro took over the reins of Al-Nassr in 2023 at the beginning of the season. Under his leadership, the team lost the fight for the national championship, losing to Al-Hilal by 14 points. Al-Nassr started the new season with a win and a draw in the league, a victory in the semi-finals of the Super Cup against Al-Taawoun and a 1-4 defeat to Al-Hilal in the final.
Al-Nassr’s bosses see no prospects for success under Castro, who has previously led Shakhtar Donetsk, FC Porto and Botafogo, among others. That’s why they are looking for a new coach. Or rather, they’ve already found one. They want to hire Stefano Pioli.
The 58-year-old Italian left AC Milan this summer after five seasons, with whom he even celebrated the Serie A title. Pioli has previously worked at other Italian clubs – Fiorentina, Inter, Lazio, Bologna, Palermo, Chievo, Sassuolo, Piacenza, Grosseto, Parma, Modena and Salernitana. The Al-Nassr job would be his first outside his home country.
Pioli is set to take over the Saudi team after Friday’s home game against Al-Ahli. His new charges, in addition to Cristiano Ronaldo, will include Aymeric Laporte, Marcelo Brozovic, Talisca, Sadio Mane and Otavio.
