Cristiano Ronaldo Threatened with Caning in Iran: The Real Facts

Teheran

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly threatened with caning Iran because he violated the rules of adultery when he hugged a female painter. Here are the real facts.

Ronaldo came to Iran when Al Nassr meet up Persepolis in the Asian Champions League on September 20 2023. The visiting team was welcomed by the local community upon arrival in Tehran.

Iran also gave a special welcome to Ronaldo. The 38-year-old bomber was showered with gifts from his fans, including a special Persian carpet and paintings.

One of the paintings obtained Cristiano Ronaldo comes from a female painter named Fatima Hamimi. He is a famous Iranian artist who paints using his feet, due to his 85 percent paralysis.

Ronaldo really appreciated the painting gift given by Hamimi. CR7 met Hamimi, who uses a wheelchair, in person and did not hesitate to hug her and give her a kiss on the forehead as a sign of thanks.

The video of Ronaldo meeting and hugging Hamimi went viral on social media. However, not everyone is happy with what the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has done.

A group of conservative Iranian lawyers assessed that Ronaldo had violated their country’s adultery laws. Hugging and kissing a woman who is not a muhrim is a form of adultery in the eyes of Iranian sharia law.

Iran TV Station, Sharq Emroz, said Ronaldo was found guilty of adultery and sentenced to 99 lashes. These sanctions apply when the player returns to the country. However, this sanction can be canceled if Ronaldo “shows remorse” for his actions.

The Iranian government apparently denied the issue of being caned for Ronaldo. Through its official statement, Iran emphasized that it had not punished the player under any circumstances.

“We firmly reject the issuance of a court decision against any international athlete in Iran. There are concerns that the publication of such unfounded news could cover up crimes against humanity and war crimes against the oppressed Palestinian people,” read an official statement issued by the Iranian Embassy in Spain, Friday (13/10).

“It should be noted that Cristiano Ronaldo traveled to Iran on September 18 and 19 to play in official football matches and was very well received by the public and authorities. “His sincere and humane meeting with Fatima Hamami was also praised and admired by both the public and the country’s sports authorities,” he stressed.
