After the last general agreement, now the separation is official: Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United and looks for a new challenge.
Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo have parted ways and one of the biggest World Cup stars in Qatar is without a club. The English record champions confirmed the departure of the 37-year-old Portuguese in a brief statement on Tuesday evening.
The decision, which takes effect “immediately”, was unanimous. The club thanked Ronaldo for his “huge contribution” to Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances.
Ronaldo returned to his old workplace in the summer of 2021, but was unable to repeat his previous heyday and has recently been increasingly sidelined. Ronaldo had already played for the Red Devils between 2003 and 2009 and started his world career there.
United now want to focus on “continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together on successes on the pitch,” according to the statement.
Ronaldo also spoke in his statement of talks, at the end of which a separation was mutually agreed. “I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. It seems like the right time to look for a new challenge. I wish Manchester United all the best.”
General agreement with United precedes
Before leaving for the World Cup, the superstar had drawn tough scores with United on the show ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored’ and thus made headlines off the pitch. United are said to have turned against his lawyers.
Portugal will start the tournament in Group H against Ghana (17.00 CET/t-online live ticker) on Thursday. Other group opponents are Uruguay and South Korea.
