Cristiano Ronaldo (38) likes to wear expensive watches. The five-time world footballer can afford it: He is one of the richest athletes in the world, his fortune is estimated at 550 million euros, according to the business magazine Forbes he earned 122 million euros last year alone.
Now Ronaldo wants to combine his passion for luxury watches with a business and joins the online marketplace for watches Chrono24. The Karlsruhe company does not reveal the amount of the investment, according to the “Handelsblatt” it should be less than one million euros. Ultimately, the company is less concerned with the exact sum and more with the advertising impact of the football star and its enormous reach – almost 600 million people follow the Portuguese on Instagram alone.

“As a long-time watch collector and regular user of Chrono24, it is a pleasure for me to become a shareholder of the company,” the company quoted the footballer as saying. Ronaldo is the perfect partner for further global expansion and the next chapter of Chrono24, says founder and managing director Tim Stracke.
Chrono24 was founded in Karlsruhe in 2003. The company offers an online trading platform on which around 3,000 dealers and 30,000 private sellers currently offer new and used watches. According to the company, it employs more than 500 people in its offices in Karlsruhe, Berlin, New York, Miami and Tokyo.
As the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reports, a Chrono24 shareholder made contact with Ronaldo. The footballer then took three months before agreeing to a partnership and meeting founder Stracke in a hotel in Lisbon in June.
