Funny moment on Cristiano Ronaldo’s new YouTube-Kanal „UR Cristiano“ (in German “You are Cristiano”).
In a video with his partner Georgina Rodríguez, he imitated Lionel Messi’s almost legendary phrase, “What are you looking at, you idiot?”, which the Argentine superstar shouted to Dutchman Wout Weghorst in the mixed zone at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
It happened like this: During a question and answer game, Georgina jokingly called her Cristiano “Bobo”, a Spanish word for idiot. “CR7” took advantage of the opportunity and repeated Messi’s famous words with a grin: “What are you looking at, idiot?”

A sentence that went around the world during the World Cup in Qatar. After Argentina had made it to the semi-finals, Messi had shouted these very words at the defeated Dutch striker Weghorst during a TV interview. Before that, there had been some brawling during the game. Ultimately, the Argentinians won the hard-fought match 4:3 on penalties. Weghorst had explained shortly after the incident in the mixed zone that he had actually only wanted to shake Messi’s hand.
It was only weeks later that Messi spoke about the matter and expressed regret for his words on the Argentinian radio station Urbana Play’s program “Perros de la calle”. At least a little. “I don’t like what I did. But well, these are moments of great tension, great nervousness and everything happens very quickly. You react the way you react, it wasn’t planned. I don’t want to leave that image, but these are things that happen,” said the world champion.

Ronaldo’s unexpected reference to Messi’s heated remark certainly delighted his fans. Many raved about his sense of humor and quick wit. Some of Ronaldo’s now more than 50 million followers on YouTube are even demanding that the Portuguese invite Messi to his channel. But THAT would probably blow up the internet.
