Portugal won its European Championship premiere against Hungary in Budapest. This was after Raphael Guerreiro made it 1-0 in the 83rd minute of the match. Cristiano Ronaldo then put the nail in the coffin with his tenth and eleventh goals respectively in European Championship history. With that, he is now the best ever.
It was packed in Budapest when the home team Hungary received one of the pre-favorites to win the European Championship gold, Portugal.
Portugal entered the championship as the reigning champion from the gold in 2016, and they belong to the tough group Group F together with Germany, France and Hungary.
Before the match, many saw it as crucial to win against Hungary in order to create a good position for the two final group games. But a tagged Hungary would not be a punching bag.
It took until the 83rd minute of the match before Portugal got a hole in Hungary and goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. Left-back Raphael Guerreiro entered the penalty area, received an entry with his left foot and via the Hungarian defender Willi Orban the ball went into goal to 1-0 Portugal.
Just a minute later, Portugal extended their lead after Rafa was pulled down in the penalty area by the aforementioned Willi Orban. Up to the penalty spot, Portugal’s big star Cristiano Ronaldo stepped in and punctured the match.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty goal meant his tenth ever in the European Championship context. With that, he became historic, as he passed Michel Platini who previously stood on nine made.
But it did not end there. Before the end of the match, the big star had time to score another goal to score his second goal of the match and his eleventh goal in the European Championship. Not only did Cristiano Ronaldo make history with the most goals scored in the European Championship ever, he also became the player who has participated in the most European Championship tournaments ever, with five championships.
The final result was written to 3-0 and Portugal got off to a dream start at this European Championship, with a good goal difference before the upcoming matches against Germany and France, in the battle to at least pinch the first two places which means the quarterfinals.
