Los Angeles (USA), May 4. Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid athlete in the world in 2023, according to the Forbes magazine list, which places Leo Messi and Kylian Mbappé in second and third position, respectively.
The Portuguese leads this ranking – which analyzes the world business of sports stars from May 1, 2022 to May 1, 2023 – with revenues of 136 million dollars thanks, to a large extent, to the 75 million he charges from the year as salary in the Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia.
Ronaldo earned 90 million from his endorsements and other businesses off the pitch while he received 46 million for his performance on the field (Forbes considered for his calculation what he earned at Manchester United and Al Nassr in addition to the time he spent without equipment).
Cristiano thus snatched the Forbes number one from Messi, who had been the highest paid athlete in 2022 with 130 million and who appears second in the 2023 list with the same amount (65 million on the pitch and another 65 off).
Mbappé, the Argentine’s teammate at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), completes the podium with 120 million dollars, of which “only” 20 million came from his activities outside the pitch.
For his part, LeBron James, who this year became the top scorer in NBA history, occupies fourth place with 119.5 million dollars while in fifth position appears the Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez with 110 millions.
American golfers Dustin Johnson ($107 million) and Phil Mickelson ($106 million) are in sixth and seventh place, respectively, after leaving the PGA Tour and joining the controversial Saudi LIV Golf.
Stephen Curry (100.4 million dollars), Roger Federer (95.1 million, practically completely due to his businesses outside of tennis) and Kevin Durant (89.1 million) closed, in this order, the ‘top ten’ of the highest paid athletes in the world. EFE
