Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t get any closer to world record goalscorer Ali Daei on Wednesday evening. The superstar went straight to Portugal’s lackluster 1-0 win against Azerbaijan.

“It was very important to win, we knew these games would always be difficult,” said national coach Fernando Santos after the narrow success. Due to the COVID-19 regulations, the game was even played in Cristiano Ronaldo’s home ground, the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

The superstar did not make it onto the scorer list in the narrow 1-0 win against the selection of Azerbaijan and thus missed out on making up ground against Ali Daei. Ronaldo has made it his goal to replace the Iranian as the world record scorer.

Daei scored 109 goals for the Iranian national team during his playing days. As things stand, Ronaldo has 102 goals. During the international break, the 36-year-old has two more opportunities to adjust his goal account upwards.

On Saturday, Portugal will also face Serbia in the World Cup qualification in Belgrade. The away game against Luxembourg is on the agenda for a few days at the end of the international match campaign.
