Vincent Aboubakar left Al-Nassr in winter – superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was still fighting for the striker to stay.
WHAT HAPPENED? Vincent Aboubakar (31) has revealed how his departure from Al-Nassr came about in the winter. The Cameroonian joined Besiktas, freeing up a foreigner’s spot in the Saudi club’s squad for new star signing Cristiano Ronaldo (38). The Portuguese himself did not push for his departure – on the contrary.
WHAT WAS SAID? In the show ‘Talents of Africa’ on Canal+ said Aboubakar: “We talked a bit, and his [Cristianos] opinion was that he wanted me to stay. But I told him I was leaving for family reasons.”
The 31-year-old went on to say that he wanted to be closer to his family, who live in France: “Ronaldo told me: ‘If your family is very far away, it is es the best solution.'”
Aboubakar admitted he was initially “angry” when CR7 was brought in. “I was a little annoyed because it wasn’t easy. When Cristiano arrived, Al-Nassr’s coach Rudi Garcia called me to his office and told me that a foreign player had to go: either me or Jaloliddin Masharipov,” he explained centre-forward.
WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND? With the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr had one foreign player too many in the squad, so the Portuguese could not be registered for the time being. As a result, a player had to leave the club for CR7 to make its debut. Ultimately, Aboubakar moved to Besiktas Istanbul. He had already scored for the Turks from 2016 to 2017 and from 2020 to 2021.
