The creation of this championship arises as a strategy that FIFA intends to implement in said territory. Within what the initiative entails is the training of coaches, referees and players, in addition to the formation of the National Team led by women that was created in 2022.

Prior to the women’s league, in the Arab kingdom they had been carried out in 2019 and 2020 regional competitions. The tournament was called the Community Women’s Soccer League.

In 2019, a Women’s Football Development Department which, from the beginning, has had the support of the International Football Federation.

Lamia Bahian, SAFF Director of Women’s Football, welcomed the initiative to open women’s tournaments and made it clear that:

“There will be many difficulties, but football is the biggest thing that can happen to a girl or a woman. I think growing up playing soccer gave me a lot and I encourage all girls and women to play it. And I mean personality, character, on and off the field, and the practice of sport. Let them cheer up and go for the ball”.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) currently has two competitions for women, known as the Premier League and the First Division League.

The Women’s Premier League was played by 8 teams for 14 weeks due to having round-trip matches. The winning set took a prize of £220,140 (SR1.43 million).

There is still a long way to go to match the level of the women’s leagues in Europe or the United States, but it is expected that these championships can continue to be played in Saudi Arabia and its surroundings.
