Two years ago, “Transfermarkt” valued Cristiano Ronaldo at just 75 million euros (77.9 million francs). A rather low value for the multiple world footballer – the superstar himself was apparently of the same opinion.

As “Transfermarkt” coordinator Christian Schwarz reveals in an interview with “The Athletic”, he reported to the company via Instagram at the time. The striker, who was playing for Juve at the time, wanted to know how this value came about and said “he was worth more”.

«He first sent a message to our social media guys. They answered him, explained the reason and said: ‘You are by far number one in your age group’».

The difference between the ManUtd returnee and the next player on the list was between almost 35 and 60 million euros. But for Ronaldo, the explanation was apparently not good enough. “He sent a few smileys – and then blocked us,” added Schwarz.

According to “Transfermarkt”, Ronaldo is still worth CHF 36.3 million – does that make sense?

What Ronaldo thinks of his current value on the platform is not known. Because in the meantime this has fallen by more than half to CHF 36.3 million at “Transfermarkt”.

According to Schwarz, age plays a major role in the assessment. “It is one of the most important factors today. Ronaldo is old, as is Lionel Messi, and they are devalued simply because of their age.” Even if said players “are just as good as three years ago, they are just three years older.”
