Cristiano Ronaldo Claims Saudi Pro League Surpasses Ligue 1: Managerial and Player Reactions

Cristiano Ronaldo says Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1

During his speech at the Globe Soccer Awards, Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo (38) claimed that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1. Lille OSC manager Paulo Fonseca reacted to this statement from his compatriot.

Paulo Fonseca’s response

“The Saudi League is no worse than Ligue 1 – it’s actually more competitive than Ligue 1, I can say that after spending a year there. We are better than the French league now,” said the former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus player, who never featured in Ligue 1. However, Fonseca questioned the incentive of Ronaldo to make such a derogatory comment, given that the Portuguese striker has never played in the French top flight.

The criticisms of Eric Roy and Albert Riera

The Portuguese international has already repeatedly defended the PIF-owned league, claiming earlier this year that the Saudi league is better than that of his native Portugal, while also taking a subtle dig at the former Paris Saint-Germain star. Germain and current Inter Miami player, Lionel Messi, saying the Pro League is “much better than MLS”. Ronaldo’s comments also drew heavy criticism from other Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 managers.
