Just a week ago, Cristiano Ronaldo caused a stir with a statement: “I think the Saudi league is no worse than the French Ligue 1.” In his opinion, Saudi Arabia is more competitive. Ronaldo was partly criticized for his statement; Ligue 1 is usually considered one of the big five football leagues. And a ranking by the statistics service Opta now shows how wrong the Portuguese was.
Opta rates thousands of teams from over a hundred countries on a scale of 0 to 100. Manchester City is currently in first place, ahead of Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

In October, Opta compiled a ranking of the leagues. For this purpose, the average rankings of the teams were calculated. Unsurprisingly, the British Premier League is at the top with an average rating of 87.7. They are followed by the Bundesliga (84.0), Serie A (83.5), the Spanish La Liga (83.4) and Ligue 1 (81.5).
The Saudi Pro League, on the other hand, only has an average score of 71.9 and is therefore in 27th place. Not only far behind Ligue 1, but also behind the Cypriot or Danish leagues. The Swiss Super League is also rated better: with 75.7 points, it ranks eleventh. The MLS with Ronaldo’s long-term rival Lionel Messi is also significantly higher in 15th place.

One could now argue that Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr must have been rated well after all. But the club is only in 68th place, just ahead of Leicester but behind Wolfsburg or Brest.
