Cristiano Ronaldo was called a ‘fool’ by former Liverpool star Didi Hamann after Portugal’s 4-2 loss to Germany in Munich.
After losing to France earlier this week, Die Mannschaft was looking down the barrel of an ignominious early exit when Ronaldo put his country ahead in the 15th minute, starting and ending an impressive counterattack that began with the player from 36 years running a corner. outside his own penalty area.
Moments later, the Juventus forward performed sublime dexterity, kicking the ball upward with his instep and over Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, before stepping back without looking, almost posing for a photograph in the process.
Hamann, however, was not impressed, stating that the 36-year-old’s complacency was counterproductive and would have spurred the Germans, who returned to the competition and ultimately ran out of convincing 4-2 winners.
“I think it’s silly,” he told RTE. ‘He throws the ball, pretends to catch it and taps it back, and looks away … of course it is [amazing] and we know he can do that … I think he’s somehow belittling the opposition.
‘This is at 1-0 and I’m sitting here while everyone is raving about it. Yes, he is the best, with Messi … Now he seems a fool. This is 1-0. It seems like a fool.
If you ask the German players, they will now tell you what they thought of it. They would have realized that.
