Cristiano Ronaldo accused of “cowardly challenge” at end of Manchester derby

Man United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of throwing a ‘cowardly challenge’ on Kevin De Bruyne at the end of the Manchester derby yesterday.

Silva completes the score

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men of course marked their return to the Premier League just over 24 hours ago.

Following a crucial comeback point at Atalanta during the week, the Red Devils welcomed fierce rivals Man City to Old Trafford for a second straight league victory.

However, when all was said and done on Saturday, those efforts failed, to say the least.

The last in a season of disappointing performances finally saw United go to the sword by two goals to nil.

Eric Bailly’s own goal opened the ball for Pep Guardiola’s city in ten minutes, before Bernardo Silva’s back post on the break allowed the visitors to come out with all three points.

“A good market”

In turn, in the 24 hours since action ended in Manchester on Sunday, it should come as no surprise to learn that a whole slew of Man United stars have been singled out for deserved criticism.

Fred, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire struggled throughout the derby, amid a disastrous team performance.

And now, as noted above, the aftermath of the match has seen a new conviction directed at none other than the Red Devils star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Sunday, Trevor Sinclair, of course former City, was keen to highlight a late challenge from the Portuguese, which saw him catch up with Kevin De Bruyne, who had already been eliminated by Bruno Fernandes.

Sinclair went so far as to call Ronaldo’s attempt a “cowardly challenge”, due to a growing temperament:

” It is cheap. “

“The challenge initially came from Fernandes, and while he’s down after being fouled, Ronaldo goes into that. “

“I know it’s only one foot, but he jumped in with his crampons showing. I thought it was a little mean.

“It’s a bit of frustration, but it’s not OK. I hope De Bruyne is doing well because it is a very bad challenge.

It’s a cowardly challenge. He gets away with a couple, the one with [Liverpool’s] Curtis Jones too. He has a temper because he’s a winner. He doesn’t like to lose.
