Rome –
The UN World Food Program (WFP) said that civilians in Gaza, Palestine, facing the threat of starvation as food is ‘almost non-existent’. Gaza residents are also faced with a clean water crisis.
“With winter approaching, unsafe and overcrowded shelters, and a lack of clean water, civilians face the prospect of starvation,” said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain in a statement as reported by AFP, Friday (17/11/2023 ).
The WFP has been warning of increasing hunger for weeks in Gaza. Cindy said that bread is now scarce or non-existent and it is impossible to meet the food needs of Gazans if only one border crossing is currently operational.
“The only hope is to open a second safe route to bring food to Gaza,” he said.
WFP said fuel shortages were also hampering food deliveries to Gaza. This is because the trucks that arrived from Egypt last Tuesday could not reach civilians because they ran out of fuel.
The amount of food entering Gaza remains grossly inadequate, with the WFP warning that it is only enough to meet seven percent of the minimum daily calorie requirement.
