Crisis in Niger: France to Evacuate Citizens Amid Anti-French Protests and Political Unrest

France will soon begin evacuating its citizens from Niger, where anti-French protests have erupted since the coup, the French embassy in Niamey announced on Tuesday.

“Given the deteriorating security situation in Niamey and taking advantage of the relative calm prevailing in Niamey, an evacuation operation from Niamey is being prepared,” the embassy said in a letter to French citizens, adding that the evacuation by air “will take place very soon and within a very limited time frame.”

It has already been reported that a military coup took place in Niger on July 26, in which the president elected in 2021, Mohamed Bazum, was overthrown. After the coup, protests against France and demonstrations in support of Russia took place in Niger.
