Thousands Shiver in Ukrainian Winter as Heating Crisis Grips Kryvyi Rih
Across Kryvyi Rih, a city in central Ukraine, the bitter cold of winter is settling in, but for over 70,000 residents, warmth remains a distant dream. Nearly 550 buildings, including apartment complexes and homes, lack heating due to a dire situation impacting the city’s main heat provider, Kryvyi Rihteплоcentr.
Frustrated residents and community leaders gathered in front of City Hall on Wednesday, mourning the absence of a vital service and demanding action. Symbolic tombstones marking the occasion displayed dates and somber messages, highlighting the urgent situation and its direct impact on people’s lives.
“We gotta take action,” shared a resident, standing among the somber crowd. “We have wounded families, veterans, who are freezing in their own homes! Hospitals are struggling because water and toilets aren’t working. We are being told to go home, where should we go?”
The lack of heating has plagued Kryvyi Rih before. Last winter, many residents experienced a brutally cold winter with minimal heat, lasting just 1.5 months. This year, the situation has become even more dire. Emergency crews are scrambling to restore heating, but the task is overwhelming.
“My entire district went from 42 maintenance workers to 17,” explains Alexander Antonchenko, head of the Northern Operational District at Kryvyi Rihteплоcentr. "We have 20 teams working around the clock, but they are coming from all over Ukraine – Lviv, Ternopil, Rovno…."
Adding to the chaos, repairs to the heat network have created a new set of problems. Leaky pipes are flooding basements with scalding hot water, raising concerns about structural damage.

"We are seeing a constant cycle – we fix one leak, another one appears," recounts Antonchenko. "It’s a race against time, and every day, more buildings are added to those needing urgent repairs."
While crews tirelessly fix the heat supply network – a painstaking process involving over 50 repair teams – many residents remain fearful of the coming winter months, wondering if anything will change before the freezing temperatures become unbearable. They fear what will happen if the previous situation repeats, and families suffer through another winter with little to no heat.
Adding insult to injury, residents worry about the prospect of being billed in full for a service they haven’t received. This injustice adds to the sense of despair and anger felt by many in Kryvyi Rih, highlighting the profound impact this crisis is having on their lives.
