Crisis in Brazilian Football Association: Ancelotti’s Contract Extension and FIFA Legal Dispute

Anyone who thinks that a major international football association cannot be in a crisis worse than the DFB is wrong.

At the 2022 World Cup, Tité was still in charge as coach of the Seleção; he has coached the record world champion since 2016. After the elimination in the quarter-finals against Croatia, even an average of 2.42 points in 81 games could not save the coach, especially since Brazil has been waiting for its sixth World Cup title since 2002.

As a result, however, the crisis really gained momentum. Neither Ramon Menezes nor Fernando Diniz, who is also known as the “Brazilian Guardiola” in Brazil, were able to achieve the desired success. Pep Guardiola himself is said to have canceled the association at the beginning of the year.

Ancelotti extension? “The End of a Soap Opera”

And now Carlo Ancelotti, whose confirmation for next year within the association was already considered certain, also gave the proud football nation a basket.

The former association president Ednaldo Rodrigues assured the media in the summer that Ancelotti would replace Diniz as coach next June and lead the Seleção to the Copa América 2024.

The fact that the star coach finally extended his contract with Real Madrid is like a slap in the face to the Brazilian association. Especially since the Italian should finally fulfill the hopes of consistency in the coaching bench.

“The soap opera surrounding Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team is over,” headlines Gazeta Esportiva.

Suspension threatens! Legal dispute with FIFA

However, the vacancy in the coaching bench is not the only problem. The record world champion is threatened with suspension by FIFA.

At the center of the affair: the same Rodrigues who was still dreaming of Ancelotti in the summer. The association boss has now been removed from office by a civilian court due to alleged irregularities in his election in March 2022.

For FIFA, this is unacceptable interference by state bodies in the affairs of its member associations, which is prohibited by the statutes.

The world football association announced that further intervention in the management structure of the Brazilian association would result in the immediate suspension of the national team and clubs from all competitions.

Gallows humor on social media

The association’s catastrophic situation also goes unmentioned on social media.

“Right now the Brazilian national team has no president, no director, no coach and our most important player is on a cruise ship celebrating with a knee injury. What a time to be a Seleção fan,” writes DataFutebol on X.

Brazil’s results are historically weak

This aptly describes the numerous crises that are currently plaguing Brazil – except for one.

There is also a threat of an unprecedented disaster in sports. Brazil’s team recently lost three World Cup qualifying games in a row, including the home game against Argentina (0-1). The Seleção had never lost at home in World Cup qualifying before.

In addition, the offensive has only scored three goals in the last five games and is still without the injured superstar Neymar.

The striker, who tore his cruciate ligament in October and recently caused a stir by taking part in a cruise, should be fit again by the time qualifying continues at the beginning of September 2024. Because Brazil needs his goals more than ever.

The team is currently only in sixth place in the table behind nations like Venezuela and Ecuador and is therefore in the last place that entitles it to direct participation in the 2026 World Cup.

If the Brazilians slip one more place, they would even have to take the detour via the intercontinental playoffs.

A World Cup without Brazil? Inconceivably

Nobody at Sugarloaf can imagine that Brazil won’t take part in a World Cup. Especially since it has never been so easy to qualify for a final tournament after the World Cup field has expanded to 48 teams.

Even though the time of legendary players like Pelé, Ronaldinho, Kaká or Ronaldo is long gone, stars like Vinicius, Alisson and Gabriel Jesus are still available.

There is still time to get back on track before the 2024 Copa América and the 2026 World Cup. But hope for this dwindles with every setback that the proud football nation has to accept.
