Crisis could lead 100 million people to extreme poverty

Lusa

World Bank President David Malpass estimated today that the covid-19 crisis could lead up to 100 million people to extreme poverty worldwide and called on creditors to reduce the debt of poor countries.

In an interview with the France-Presse Agency (AFP), the head of the World Bank said that between 70 and 100 million people could go into “extreme poverty”, a number that “could increase” if the pandemic worsens or lasts a long time.

That is why it is “imperative” that creditors reduce the debt of poor countries, “defended Malpass.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 787,918 deaths and infected more than 22.4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
