Yes. For example, it’s specifically about “Frames per second”, but imho what you really notice is the latency. The feedback needs to be fast, less than 0.1 second, otherwise the experience very quickly becomes a “phone conversation where you feel like you’re lagged.” This is how Stadia felt to me, I can get used to it, but it’s certainly not preferable.
Looking at my experience, for “straight” manipulation – and I’ve been able to measure this especially when recording my guitar or vocals – about ~12-16ms is about the maximum workable, anything above what you feels noticeably slowed down. But this always sounds if I’m playing a game, running a guitar through a software rig, trying to draw something, etc. Etc.
If I then do the math, I see a pretty clear explanation why my 144Hz games run a little better, even though 60fps is definitely approaching “comfortable”:
30 fps = 33.33 milliseconds to next frame.
60fps = 16.66ms
144fps = 6.94ms
The guideline for games is no different than for other applications.
