An epidemic would have spread to the two wards of the Termoli hospital. Once some patients have been isolated, the environments will have to be disinfected
Still ‘trouble’ for the San Timoteo hospital in Termoli which is said to be struggling, in recent days, with an epidemic of ‘Cloristium difficile’ which has infected the wards first of Medicine and then of Intensive Care.
It is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium, physiologically present in the bacterial flora of the vagina and intestines and is considered one of the main nosocomial pathogens associated with exposure to antibiotics.
It is in fact one of the most feared infections in hospitals, due to the high resistance to antibiotics which leads the problem to recur frequently in patients already affected. The transmission of the disease typically occurs via the fecal-oral route, by bringing hands contaminated by Clostridium difficile spores to the mouth, which may have infested various surfaces such as bedside tables, taps, and inadequately cleaned bathroom drains. According to scientific literature, in recent years there has been an increase not only in cases but also in the severity of these infections and associated mortality, especially in elderly patients, with a consequent increase in the length of hospital stay and in the costs of direct health care and live. Currently some patients have been isolated and an environmental disinfection will soon be carried out in the contaminated departments in question.
