Criminal gangs act brutally in the Capital City Haiti, Port-au-Prince. This action forced thousands of people to flee.
Reporting from AFP, Wednesday (16/8/2023), they fled using cars, motorbikes or on foot. people are escaping from the local district which is infested with criminal gangs.
Haiti’s Civil Protection Department estimates that around 3,120 people fled the Carrefour-Feuilles district, which is south of Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday (15/8) local time.
Local officials predict the number of displaced residents will likely increase.
“We are living in a very difficult situation,” Elie Derisca, who is a resident of the Carrefour-Feuilles district, told AFP.
“I don’t even know where to go. I have to leave my house,” he said.
US Police Search for Gang Leader
The district is known to be a frequent target of attacks by a criminal gang led by Renel Destina, known by the alias Ti Lapli. The figure of Destina is being hunted by the United States (US) authorities for kidnapping a number of American citizens.
“The police living in the area no longer have the means to defend us. As a result, the bandits can take over our house,” Derisca told AFP.
Residents’ Houses Burnt
He added that the criminals looted and burned the houses of residents in the district, and even caused several deaths.
Haiti’s Oritas said houses in the district had been burned and there were “lost human lives”, but did not give a specific number.
Chaos was clearly visible on the streets of the Carrefour-Feuilles district on Tuesday (15/8) local time. Some residents were seen lifting their suitcases over their heads, while others placed mattresses and furniture on the roofs of their cars.
