Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) – The main guard in downtown Frankfurt is to be better monitored with modern security technology in the future. The city of Frankfurt and the Frankfurt police are putting a new video surveillance system into operation today. Police President Gerhard Bereswill and City Councilor Markus Frank (CDU) officially start surveillance in the morning (9 a.m.) and jointly sign the usage contract for the facility.

In Hesse there are now 279 cameras in operation to monitor public places. The aim is to reduce the number of crimes committed there. According to a response from the Hessian Ministry of the Interior to a small request from the SPD parliamentary group in the Hessian state parliament, the cameras are being used in 20 cities in 25 locations. According to the ministry, a total of 2265 criminal offenses were recorded last year at 24 locations in 19 cities.

In Frankfurt, the video cameras recorded 733 crimes at two locations in the area of responsibility of the Frankfurt police headquarters. In 2016, 1,335 crimes were recorded there. The state of Hesse is currently promoting video security technology in municipalities with around 2.8 million euros a year, the ministry said.
