Crime drama “East New York” celebrates German premiere after all

“East New York” starts on Sat.1 EmotionsCBSCrime drama

They haven’t been on patrol for long, the investigators from the east of the Big Apple. The crime drama “East New York” only lasted one season on the US channel CBS. These 21 episodes are now celebrating their German premiere. From August 25, the series can be seen every Sunday afternoon on the pay-TV channel Sat.1 Emotions, in double episodes starting at 1:55 p.m.

“East New York” is about Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren), who has just taken over responsibility for the poorer district on the outskirts of Brooklyn, more precisely for the 74th precinct. She and her colleagues are confronted with increasing social change, riots and the early signs of gentrification.

Jimmy Smits, who plays Assistant Chief John Suarez, brings relevant crime and procedural experience. Smits appeared in the crime classic “New York Cops – NYPD Blue” for five seasons in the 1990s.

In the series opener “Newbie on the Precinct,” Haywood is faced with a shooting on her first day in which two people are killed. Initially, it is the case of detectives Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin) and Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez). At the same time, Haywood has to find volunteers for a new project that will involve police officers more closely in the community. Patrol Officer Brandy Quinland (Olivia Luccardi) agrees to move into an appropriate apartment in a socially disadvantaged area. Training Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), however, is concerned about Quinland’s safety and stands by her side.

“East New York” was developed by “LA Law” and “Law & Order” veteran William M. Finkelstein and Mike Flynn for Warner Bros. Television. The production studio and broadcaster CBS were unable to agree on the terms for an extension in spring 2023, which ultimately led to the cancellation.
