Aachen (AP) – Almost a quarter of a century after a murder case with a long unidentified victim, the Aachen district court wants to give the verdict on Tuesday. The public prosecutor’s office in Aachen has demanded life imprisonment for the accused. The defense of the 51-year-old German has requested an acquittal. The accused remained silent during the trial.

The court heard more than 45 witnesses to come to terms with what happened a long time ago. Among them was the main witness who knew about the violence from hearsay and who had reported after a television report. Murder does not expire.

The trial concerns the death of a motorhome dealer from Aachen almost 25 years ago. The accused is said to have worked with a long-dead accomplice in the dealer’s workshop and killed the then 43-year-old family man for 5,000 marks out of greed.

His bare body was discovered on December 8, 1996 in a disused gravel pit north of Krefeld. The identity of the cruelly battered victim was unknown for over 20 years. Therefore the place where the corpses were found “Sandkuhle” gave the unsolved case its name. It was not until 2019 that a viewer of the wanted program “Aktenzeichen XY … unsolved” mentioned the name of the deceased and gave a reference to the accused.
