Until now, the nursery schools Municipal governments had promoted actions against the climate crisis in isolation. The “Bressols pel clima” strategy is a joint and coordinated response from all schools to promote stronger actions against the climate emergency in Barcelona. These are the most outstanding actions of the different thematic lines of the plan:
Naturalization of spaces
More trees and plants will be planted in the patios and it will be checked whether green roofs can be installed on the roofs of educational facilities.
The patios of the nursery schools already participate in the program “Courtyards open to the neighborhood” so that everyone can use them.
energy transition
Se will increase the installations of renewable energy in the nursery schools. Currently there are 58 facilities with solar thermal installations, 4 have photovoltaic panels and 76 have contracted the electricity supply with the metropolitan public marketer, Barcelona Energy.
The creation of energy communities will also be promoted in the buildings shared with the Municipal Housing Institute.
Thermal comfort
It will be studied which schools, and which of their patios, could be incorporated into the network of climate refuges taking into account the geographical suitability and for children. It is expected that next summer the first five patios of nursery schools.
Reduce, reuse and recycle
four out of ten nursery schools they participate in or organize some type of market for the exchange of clothing, toys and various parenting utensils, an initiative that contributes to reducing consumption and that has an important didactic component, related to reuse and waste reduction. The “Bressols pel clima” strategy wants to extend and systematize these experiences.
Sustainable and healthy food
The network of nursery schools wants to consolidate the commitment to local and organic food that currently already includes 90% of the products on the menu. In this axis, the planned actions are aimed at improving some aspects such as increasing the presence of vegetable proteins in the menus, offering families recommendations on sustainable menus, avoiding food waste or establishing a direct relationship with the neighborhood composters to deliver the food scraps to generate compost.
Environmental awareness and habits
Currently 27 nursery schools Municipal governments are part of the Escuelas + Sostenibles network and the Commitment to Climate Justice. The goal is to incorporate all nursery schools to this network with concrete actions within their educational projects.
