Jakarta –
The Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation revealed that the culprits of the 260 crew members (crew) has no income at Sunda Kelapa Harbor, Ancol, North Jakarta. This was because the process of evacuating the frame of the Sagam Berkah motorized sailboat (KLM) encountered problems.
KLM Sagam Berkah itself experienced a fire and sank in May 2023. However, until this week, the shipwreck had not been removed from the waters, disrupting shipping and loading and unloading activities.
Head of the Sunda Kelapa Class III Harbormaster and Authority Office (KSOP), Aries Wibowo, said that the ship with a gross weight of 245 GT caught fire at the Pelra Pier of Sunda Kelapa Harbor on May 3, 2023, at 05.00 WIB. Its cargo activity is transporting cement with PT Bahari Bintang Prima as the owner.

“At the time of the incident, the firefighting team from the Ancol Damkar together with Pelindo and the Sunda Kelapa KSOP team managed to extinguish the fire at 07.30 WIB. However, the post-fire ship hull is still submerged and parts of the hull have blocked the in and out channel of the Pelra terminal pool since May 4, 2023,” he said, in a written statement, Sunday (16/7/2023).
As a follow-up, DPC Pelra and ship owners have made efforts to float and remove the ship’s skeleton through manual pumping. However, there was another leak which caused this process to not be implemented successfully.
“This causes other KLM ships that are in Pelra unable to pass through the blocked channel. As an alternative, the activities of other KLM ships are diverted to Pelnas Pier,” said Aries.
His party also held a coordination meeting with ship owners, DPC Pelra and Pelindo last May. Considering that there is still a cargo of cement on board which is difficult to evacuate, it was decided that the ship owner together with DPC Pelra will gradually unload the cement while continuing to make efforts to pump water and withdraw it using a tug boat.
Then on June 13, the parties also held an evaluation and coordination meeting. During the meeting, the ship owners were asked to immediately remove the ship’s skeleton, assisted by DPC Pelra. On June 16, field monitoring was also carried out on the progress of the ship’s frame removal activity.
Seeing that the evacuation had not been successful, on July 7 yesterday the KSOP also asked for certainty whether the salvage activity had used professional and skilled personnel. Aries added that the KSOP had also ordered the acceleration of the evacuation. Due to this condition, since July 13, the salvage company has started work on lifting the ship’s hull.
“We are grateful for the cooperation and efforts of all parties involved in dealing with the KLM Sagam Berkah fire accident. We will continue to push for the removal of the ship’s frame as soon as possible,” said Aries.
“And meanwhile, the activities of other KLM ships are still going well, although there are still several KLM ships that are stuck and have not been able to pass through the channel which is blocked by the KLM Sagam Berkah framework,” he concluded.
Aries said that KSOP would continue to monitor and report the latest information regarding the progress of removing the KLM Sagam Berkah ship hull. He also appealed to the public to pay attention to safety and continue to coordinate the implementation of activities in affected areas.
As additional information, it was previously reported that the income of 260 crew members (ABK) was affected by the KLM Sagam Berkah shipwreck. Shipping and loading and unloading activities have been disrupted, so that in the last three months their income has become uncertain.
“About 260 crew members were hit. About 50 ships were unable to sail,” said one of the KLM Mitra Buana ship captains, Abdul Majid, quoted from detikNews.
His party even admitted that they had demonstrated at the port because there was no clarity from the authorities. They asked that the wreck of the KLM, which had now sunk, be evacuated immediately.
