This is one of the key events of the summer season for jazz lovers: the Crescent Festival. On the poster for the 2023 edition, the new generation of jazz made in New York, with the Immanuel Wilkins quartet.
At the height of his 25 years, the saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins is drawing a promising career, if we rely on the excellence of his first two albums, Omega (best jazz album in 2020 according to the New York Times), and The 7th hand released by Blue Note in early 2022. “I wanted to write a preparatory piece so that my quartet fully becomes a vessel at the end of the piece”, explains the artist, referring to this latest opus where he explores “the relationship between presence and nothingness in a one-hour suite made up of seven movements”.
French jazz is also on the program, with trumpeter Yoann Loustalot and his new trio Yeti. Melodic and singular voice of the European trumpet, Yoann Loustalot is a sought-after sideman for his unique sound and melodic inventiveness. In 2022, he also played in the French tour Free , from the legendary Iggy Pop. With Yeti, this atypical trio formed by exceptional musicians, he takes us on a poetic and virtuoso universe, offering music oscillating between compositions and total improvisations.
Change of register with the Caribbean & African groove of the big band Bigre, which dusts off the traditional jazz big band by mixing rhythms and genres at will. In almost 15 years, seven albums and significant collaborations (Célia Kameni, Rover, Hawa, Thaïs Lona…), the big band Bigre (20 musicians on stage) has established itself as a pioneering big band, exploring again and again new playgrounds, taking malicious pleasure in breaking down often obsolete barriers between musical styles.
A culture of explosive mixtures that gives birth to a transcultural music, as unifying as jubilant. No wonder then that Bigre and his renowned guests (Cynthia Abraham and Juan Rozoff) lead the public on the dance floor.
At the Crescent, on the Esplanade Lamartine, place Saint-Pierre and forecourt of the Halles Saint-Pierre, in Mâcon, from Tuesday July 18 to Saturday July 22. Immanuel Wilkins quartet Thursday July 20 at 10 p.m., Yoann Loustalot and Trio Yeti Friday July 21 at 8:30 p.m., big band Bigre Saturday July 22 at 10 p.m.
